When, in 2021, a planned performance of Corelli's Christmas Concerto was cancelled due to sudden new COVID rules, the only possible combination for Midnight Mass was cello and piano. This Sonata was composed for that occasion, following Corelli's compositional style, as well as the plan of movements, beginning in g minor, and finishing with a Pastorale in G major, featuring a melody over a drone.
